Have you ever fallen in love with a food or drink that you can only get in one place in the world?
My food love affair is with sugar cookies – Disney World sugar cookies to be exact. Many who know me know that my love of the sugar cookies found only at the Orlando theme park resort knows no bounds.
After falling for their soft, sugary goodness on my first trip there when I was 8, I was hooked. Every trip since (about 10 or so!) I’ve been sure to bring home at least half a dozen to freeze. My mom threw away the last cookie in the freezer one year and needless to say… we had a bit of a teenage throwdown over it. And my dad’s even gone to the lengths of calling the resort and talking to the hotel lead chef to try and get them to send us a dozen or the recipe, to no avail. (Read: Dad is awesome.)
All this personal sugar cookie mania to tell you that 1) sugar cookies are my all time favorite cookies and 2) I’ve never found a better recipe than the one I can only seem to find at the Orlando home of Mickey Mouse.
That is… until I had an idea.
Recently, my dear friend Jessica shared with me her family’s recipe for chocolate chip cookies after she brought them to our Housewarming Cookie Exchange. Not only were they some of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, they were also delightfully soft and chewy in the middle. This is the elusive quality that those Disney World cookies also have.
Would it be possible? Could I tweak this recipe and lead myself to Disney World Sugar Cookie-Clone Heaven?
Yes! Success achieved, and now, shared with you. I hope you enjoy what are my favorite make-able at home cookies in the universe: ULTIMATE SUGAR COOKIES.
Ingredients (makes about 30 medium-sized cookies)
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (if you prefer less of a brown sugar/caramelized taste, sub white sugar for this)
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup melted butter
- 2 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tea salt
- 1 tea baking soda (not baking powder)
- Sprinkles (optional, your choosing)
- Preheat your oven to 375F.
- In a large bowl, mix all of the ingredients except the flour, salt, baking soda, and sprinkles. In a small bowl, combine the rest except for the sprinkles.
- Using a mixer, slowly add your small bowl flour mix to the wet ingredients until a sticky dough forms.
- Use a spoon or teaspoon measure to help you create rounded spoonfuls. If you’d like to make them as pictured, set out your sprinkles on a small plate and roll the spoonful of dough around until coated.
- Place your cookie dough spoonfuls on a nonstick cookie sheet, careful not to overcrowd (I did six per sheet).
- Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden brown on the edges.
